Zhaojun Tomb

Wang Zhaojun’s Tomb is located in the southern outskirts of Hohhot and was built to memorialize a Han dynasty (206B.C.-25A.D.) concubine.
In 33BC Wang Zhaojun was a concubine to Emperor Yuandi at a time of hostility between the Hans and the Mongolians. She volunteered to leave the imperial court and marry the Mongolian chieftain who, it is claimed, was so enamored with her that peace between the 2 groups was maintained for the next 60 years.
Wang Zhaojun’s Tomb is now considered a symbol of China’s national unity. The tomb is a 33-meter-high earth mound and can be climbed to gain views of the city.
